Norma S. Giles, 93, passed away on September 30, 2019, at Meadowbrook Place in Baker City, Oregon. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 7, 2019, at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints chapel, 2625 Hughes Lane. Bishop Mike Smith will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday, October 7, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. - 10:40 a.m. in the LDS Relief Society room. Interment will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Norma was born in Baker, Oregon, on August 11, 1926, to Cleon and Florence Simmons.
Norma graduated from Baker High School, class of 1944. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a journalism degree in 1949. While at BYU, she met Ralph Luke Giles of Heber City, Utah. They were married in the LDS Logan Utah Temple on June 9, 1949. They celebrated 60 years of marriage on June 9, 2009, just before Ralph passed away.
Ralph and Norma were blessed with three daughters, Lisa, Lori, and Leslie.
Norma worked for Leo Adler and later Joe Meier.
Norma was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was a gifted Sunday School teacher, played the piano for 15 years for the children's group, wrote plays for the youth to perform, and participated in the Church’s genealogy extraction program. She loved the scriptures.
Norma was skilled in sewing, carpentry, canning, and loved to read. She and Ralph enjoyed dancing at church dances. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Ralph, Norma was predeceased by her parents, and her sisters, Marceen Andel and Carol Simmons. Surviving relatives include her three daughters, Lisa Beyer and her husband, Dennis, of Baker City, Lori Snyder and her husband ,Greg, of Salem, Utah, and Leslie Smith and her husband, Larry, of North Salt Lake; ten grandchildren, Sarah Bowden, Megan Niepraschk, Amelia Rose, Marisa Snyder, Douglas Beyer, Courtney Snyder, Hannah Beardsley, Tyler Smith, Brandon Smith, and Matthew Smith; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces.
